Sudanese government forces recapture key town in western Darfur, bolstering control in region.

The town of Kulbus (Kulbus) in Sudan's Western Darfur region has recently been retaken by Sudan's Joint Forces after being occupied by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since October 2024, a span of two years. This counterattack marks a strengthening of control by the Sudanese government forces over the Western Darfur region.

The Darfur Joint Protection Force (DJPF) is a joint unit formed on April 27, 2023, consisting of four former rebel groups and signatories to the Juba Peace Agreement, including the Sudan Liberation Movement-Minni Minnawi (SLM-Minawi), Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Sudan Alliance, and Sudan Liberation Forces. The unit's leader is Minni Minnawi, the governor of the Darfur region. However, the Darfur Joint Protection Force has been criticized for its inability to ensure the safety of civilians in the Darfur region. According to Ahmed Hussein Mustafa, chairman of the Joint Forces' Media Committee, the unit's limited capabilities and logistical support have hindered its ability to deploy forces in the Darfur region.

Prior to the Joint Forces' recapture of Kulbus, the Darfur Joint Protection Force had control over roads connecting North Korodofan and West Korodofan with Darfur, which are crucial for Sudan's transportation and trade. The Darfur Joint Protection Force's control has led to a slight improvement in the security situation in the region. Nevertheless, the unit continues to face criticism and challenges from various sides, including its inability to effectively protect civilians and lack of sufficient logistical support.

The conflict in Sudan and Darfur has been a significant issue in the region since 2003. Over 2 million people have been displaced, and tens of thousands have died. The international community has repeatedly called on the Sudanese government and all parties to cease fire and engage in peace talks. Despite recent efforts, the conflict between the Sudanese government and rebels continues, resulting in thousands of displaced persons and hundreds of deaths.

The establishment of the Darfur Joint Protection Force and the Joint Forces' recapture of Kulbus mark a strengthening of Sudanese government control over the Darfur region. However, the security situation in the region remains unstable and requires continued international attention and support.

For Taiwan, the conflict in Sudan and Darfur may not have a direct impact, but these events have significant implications for regional and global security. As a member of the international community, Taiwan needs to pay attention to and understand these events to better participate in international affairs and maintain regional security. Additionally, Taiwan can learn from these events how to handle complex security issues and uphold humanitarian principles and human rights.
