Israel airstrike kills Hamas leader's nephew in Gaza, tensions rise

Israel’s military has confirmed that Walid Haniyeh, the deputy commander of the Nukhba Force – the elite unit of Hamas – was killed in an airstrike in the Gaza Strip. Haniyeh was the nephew of former Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh. The death adds another flashpoint to the already volatile relationship between Israel and Hamas.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Israel’s national armed forces established on 26 May 1948 shortly after the declaration of independence, comprise three service branches: the Israeli Army, the Israeli Air Force and the Israeli Navy. As the sole military institution within Israel’s security apparatus, the IDF is headed by the Chief of the General Staff, who reports to the Minister of Defense. The IDF has played a central role in every armed conflict Israel has faced since its founding.

Hamas, an Islamist organization founded in 1987, has been one of Israel’s principal adversaries since the 1990s. The group governs the Gaza Strip and has repeatedly engaged in armed confrontations with Israel. Ismail Haniyeh served as Hamas’s political leader from 2017 to 2021. His nephew, Walid Haniyeh, held the position of deputy commander of Hamas’s military wing, the Nukhba Force, until his death in a recent Israeli airstrike on Gaza.

The underlying tension between Israel and Hamas stems from the long‑standing dispute over Palestinian territory. Israel declared independence in 1948, and Palestinians have since sought the establishment of an independent state. Hamas’s control of Gaza and its frequent clashes with Israel, which designates Hamas as a terrorist organization, have led to an escalating cycle of violence in recent years, resulting in substantial civilian casualties on both sides.

Following the IDF’s announcement of Walid Haniyeh’s death, Hamas issued a strong response. A Hamas spokesperson described the Israeli airstrike as a provocation against the Palestinian people and vowed that the group would continue to resist what it called Israeli aggression. Israeli officials, by contrast, framed the strike as a legitimate military operation aimed at degrading Hamas’s capabilities and protecting Israel’s security.

While the incident does not involve Taiwan directly, its implications for regional stability are noteworthy. The Middle East’s persistent volatility remains a focal point of global attention, particularly the Israel‑Palestine conflict.
