African CDC confirms Marburg virus case in Uganda

The African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recently confirmed a case of Marburg virus in Uganda, a notification that emerged amid the country’s ongoing Ebola outbreak. Uganda, an inland country in East Africa, has faced several major public‑health challenges in recent years.

Marburg virus is a highly transmissible and lethal pathogen belonging to the Filoviridae family, the same as Ebola. It spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, and its symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain and hemorrhage. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the case‑fatality rate of Marburg virus can reach 88 %, making it an extremely dangerous pathogen. The confirmation by the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention means that Uganda is now confronting two highly lethal viral epidemics simultaneously.
