The refugees were returning to Afghanistan from Pakistan and were traveling along the Kabul-Nangarhar Highway.

On October 3, 2023, the Pakistani government ordered all undocumented foreigners to leave the country within one month or face deportation. Consequently, many Afghans began leaving Pakistan, and according to government reports, the number of Afghan citizens within Pakistan decreased to fewer than 1.9 million by January 2026.

This traffic accident highlights the challenges and difficulties faced by Afghan refugees, particularly those returning to their homeland. Many refugees encounter security risks, economic hardships, and social integration challenges along their journey back to Afghanistan.
