Bratan (volcano)

Bratan, also known as Catur or Tjatur, is a dormant caldera/stratovolcano located at the northern side of the island of Bali, Indonesia. The volcanic complex covers an area of 11 by 6 kilometres (6.8 mi × 3.7 mi). The caldera contains three separate crater lakes — Lake Bratan (Danau Bratan), Lake Buyan (Danau Buyan), and Lake Tamblingan (Danau Tamblingan) — as well as several post-caldera volcanic cones. The Bratan caldera is the most prominent feature of the Buyan-Bratan volcanic complex, which also includes several post-caldera stratovolcanoes along its southern rim. Volcanism at Bratan is the result of subduction as the Indo-Australian plate subducts beneath the Eurasian plate. Although there have been no eruptions in historic times, geothermal activity in the form of numerous hot springs and fumaroles persists, heated by a magma chamber at depth.
