Synagogue (Neustadtgödens)

The former synagogue in Neustadtgödens is a largely well-preserved synagogue in East Frisia. The Jewish community of Neustadtgödens had it built in 1852. Until 1902, the building also served as a house of worship for the Jews of neighboring Wilhelmshaven. From the end of the 19th century onward, economic factors caused an increasing exodus of Jews (as well as non-Jewish residents) from Neustadtgödens. During the Nazi era, the community had shrunk so much that attendance had dwindled to the point that regular services could no longer be held. On March 15, 1936, the community gave up the synagogue with a farewell service. The building then passed into private ownership, and thus survived the November pogroms of 1938. Since July 10, 2015, the building has been reopened to the public as the Erinnerungsort ehemalige Synagoge in Neustadtgödens ("Memorial Site of the Former Synagogue in Neustadtgödens").
