The Loa River (Río Loa) is an intermittent, U-shaped river in Chile's northern Antofagasta Region, flowing along part of the boundary with the Tarapacá Region. At 440 km (270 mi) long, it is the country's longest river and the main watercourse of the Atacama Desert. Despite draining the largest river basin in Chile, the Loa carries a comparatively small volume of water because of the arid character of the region it crosses, though its flow has nonetheless allowed the formation of important oases along its course.
