Penrith Speedway-Aerodrome

Penrith Speedway-Aerodrome was a racing and air sports venue located in Belmore Park, Penrith in Outer Western Sydney, New South Wales. Prior to the Penrith Speedway-Aerodrome in the mid-1920s, it served training and experimental flights of the Aerial League of Australia beginning in 1909. As a result, it is considered as the earliest airfield in Australia. At the time, the airfield held air pageants and aerial racing events while the speedway hosted motorcycle and car races. The racing course was established in 1924, and the aerodrome opened on 26 January 1928 during Anniversary Day. During World War II in 1942, the site was converted into an Army stores depot, and grew to become one of the largest in Australia. It winded down operations in 1994, and was subsequently redeveloped for the Thornton Estate. The speedway and aerodrome's legacy is preserved through a memorial and sculpture near the estate.
