Lin Jia-lung visits Palau for Pacific Prosperity Expo; US, Japan, Australia display democratic partnership

Recently, at the invitation of President Surangel Whipps Jr. of the Republic of Palau, a Pacific ally, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung personally led a delegation to visit Palau, where he attended the opening ceremony of the meaningful "Pacific Prosperity Special Exhibition" on local time. The event not only showcased the long-standing cooperation outcomes between Taiwan and Palau, but also gathered diplomatic envoys to Palau from like-minded countries such as the United States, Japan, and Australia, demonstrating to the international community the concrete implementation of close cooperation and solid partnerships among the democratic camp in the South Pacific region.

Under the current geopolitical landscape, South Pacific island nations have become an important sector in the strategic competition of the Indo-Pacific region. As an island nation member in the Pacific, Taiwan has long adhered to the principles of "mutual benefit, mutual assistance, steady and pragmatic," and has carried out deep bilateral cooperation with allies such as Palau in various fields including agriculture, medical care, infrastructure, information and communications technology, education, and clean energy. Minister Lin's personal trip to Palau to attend the special exhibition not only demonstrated Taiwan's high regard for bilateral ties, but also highlighted Taiwan's indispensable role in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region through multilateral interaction venues.

Notably, this special exhibition was not merely a presentation of results for bilateral relations between Taiwan and Palau; the presence of diplomatic envoys to Palau from the United States, Japan, and Australia was also seen at the venue. In recent years, countries such as the US, Japan, and Australia have actively deepened their engagement in the South Pacific region and share similar values with Taiwan, jointly promoting the so-called "Blue Pacific" vision. Through appearing on the same stage and exchanging views with these major regional democracies, Minister Lin's trip effectively sent a strong signal to the outside world: Taiwan's assistance and cooperation in the Pacific region are not fought alone, but rather form a dense cooperation network with global democratic partners to jointly help Pacific island nations cope with the most severe current challenges such as climate change, economic development, and external authoritarian expansion.

Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. has long spoken up for Taiwan in international arenas, firmly defended diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Palau, and actively promoted close connections between the two countries in aspects such as tourism and sustainable development. The cooperation model between Taiwan and Palau is often regarded as a paradigm for Taiwan's promotion of international aid such as "value diplomacy." From the early deployment of agricultural technical missions and public health and medical cooperation, to the economic recovery and transformation in response to the tourism industry being severely hit by the pandemic in recent years, Taiwan has always been Palau's most trusted and solid development partner. During his visit to the special exhibition, Minister Lin gained an in-depth understanding of the implementation status of various cooperative projects and exchanged views with local officials and representatives of like-minded countries, which will help ensure that Taiwan's future policy planning in the Pacific region is closer to the actual needs of its allies.
