Monument to Nicholas I

The Monument to Nicholas I (I) consists of an equestrian bronze statue of Nicholas I of Russia, placed on an elaborate pedestal. It stands in front of Saint Isaac's Cathedral in St Isaac's Square in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was designed by French architect Auguste de Montferrand and when unveiled on July 7 [O.S. June 25], 1859, the six-meter statue created by sculptor Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg was considered a technical wonder. At the time it was the first, and today one of only a few bronze statues with only two support points, the rear hooves of the horse.
