Burndy Library

The Burndy Library (1941–2006) was one of the world's largest collections of books on the history of science and technology. It was begun by Bern Dibner in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1941, then managed and developed further after his death by the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology at MIT beginning in 1992. A quarter of its holdings were transferred to the Smithsonian Institution in 1974, anticipating the United States Bicentennial, forming the nucleus of the Smithsonian's Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology opened in 1976. The Burndy Library was disestablished in 2006 and its collections were transferred to the Huntington Library.
