Praia do Futuro (literally "Beach of the Future") is an urban beach on the eastern coast of Fortaleza, the capital of the Brazilian state of Ceará. Its Atlantic shoreline extends for approximately 7 km (4.3 mi), from the vicinity of the Mucuripe headland towards the mouth of the Cocó River. The name also identifies the two adjoining municipal neighbourhoods, Praia do Futuro I and Praia do Futuro II. Unlike the more sheltered central waterfront around Meireles and Iracema, Praia do Futuro faces the open ocean. Its waves, winds and changing sand bars support surfing and kitesurfing but also produce a dynamic nearshore environment. The beachfront is especially associated with its barracas de praia: establishments whose name translates as "beach huts", although some developed into large restaurant and leisure complexes. The beach became a major leisure area during Fortaleza's eastward urban expansion in the second half of the twentieth century. In 2023, the municipal government designated its seafront a zone of potential sustainable tourism development. Federal legislation in 2025 recognised Brazilian beach-hut culture and the work of its operators as part of the country's cultural heritage.
